Lo Scottish Fold ha uno standard molto simile a quello del British Shorthair, con testa arrotondata e massiccia, mento volitivo, guance piene che completano il tondo dato dagli zigomi sporgenti.La base dei baffi è larga a disegnare le dimensioni corte della testa.
Le orecchie dello Scottish Fold devono essere piccole,con punta arrotondata, posizionate ben distanziate sul cranio e piegate aderenti alla testa.
Gli occhi devono essere grandi, luminosi e rotondi a conferire il tipico sguardo “stupito” che caratterizza lo Scottish.
Per quanto riguarda la corporatura, deve essere muscolosa, con largo petto, zampe corte e massicce e coda di media lunghezza.

Una cosa che non si sa è che alla nascita i cuccioli non presentano il fenomeno dell’orecchio piegato che si manifesta dopo le prime tre settimane di vita: solo allora è possibile sapere chi è fold e chi straight.
Il tipico orecchio piegato dello Scottish Fold è legato alla presenza di un gene dominante responsabile della debolezza della cartilagine delle orecchie che si piegano con la crescita. Se invece della presenza di un gene responsabile della mutazione ce ne fossero due, quindi una coppia di geni portatori del Fold, ciò potrebbe provocare malformazioni scheletriche nei cuccioli.
Per ovviare a questa eventualità è vietato l’accoppiamento fra una fattrice e uno stallone Fold, mentre è accettato l’accoppiamento fra uno Scottish Fold e uno Scottish Straight (non portatore del gene fold), oppure di un Fold con un British Shorthair o un American Shorthair. I cuccioli generati da tali accoppiamenti avranno pedigree da Scottish Fold o Straight a seconda dell’aspetto delle orecchie.
